Oscar Piastri crashes out on the opening lap

The F1 championship leader has suffered a nightmare in Baku after crashing out on lap one

Oscar Piastri has been told he must be more selfish and potentially even defy team orders if he wants to win his maiden F1 drivers’ championship.
Piastri currently leads the drivers’ standings, with a 25-point gap to his McLaren teammate Lando Norris in second.
But after a difficult weekend in Azerbaijan earlier this month, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen has roared into contention with back-to-back race wins. The four-time champion currently sits third in the standings, 44 points behind Norris.

Piastri’s lead is no longer looking so secure after crashing out on the opening lap in Azerbaijan.
And with McLaren seemingly preferring his teammate Lando, despite reportedly introducing ‘Papaya Rules’, which allow the drivers to race freely so long as they keep it clean, the Aussie has been told it is time to put himself over the team.
Piastri was ordered to allow Norris to pass him at Monza as a result of a botched pit stop.
While earlier this season at the Hungary Grand Prix, he was also seemingly dudded by McLaren’s tactics.

And former McLaren driver David Coulthard says it is time for the Aussie to be selfish.

“Racing drivers are selfish bastards. They’ve got to Formula One because they have their elbows out and they’ve fought their way into that sport,” Couldhard said in an interview with Code Sports.
“ … They’re Formula One drivers and they both want to win, and therefore there will be a point where, to be crude about it, they’ll go and say ‘bollocks to the team, I want this victory for myself. So you can’t stage manage who’s going to score the goal, whoever’s got the ball is going to take a crack.’’

Norris booed on Monza podium

Lando Norris was given a frosty…

Two-time McLaren world champion Mika Hakkinen agreed.
“You need to be selfish, you need to think about yourself, what is best for you,” he told Code.
“Sometimes in the working environment it doesn’t look so nice because he’s, of course, a young driver and you don’t have so much experience yet in Formula One.
“But he (Piastri) will only get better. He’s a very consistent driver, which is a powerful tool, and he’s a bloody quick -driver.’’

The pair’s comments come after former Haas team principal Guenther Steiner said the team will need to back one driver sooner rather than later.

“It will happen because in the end, you want to win the drivers’ championship as well, not only the constructors’ and the team is more important than the driver, and the drivers are, as I always say, and not diminishing, just part of a team,” Steiner explained on The Red Flags Podcast.

“And both cannot win, so instead of having two fighting and losing it all, you get somebody to win. As much as Lando is the face, and, as you put it, the favoured son, I think McLaren needs to be above that, and will be above that.”
“ … Now, it’s getting to a point where there could be some damage to the team in losing the drivers’ championship. So if you run the team, you have to prevent this by putting a rule down to make somebody unhappy. And so it should be.”
The drivers will return to the grid this weekend for the Singapore Grand Prix.
