FBI chief Kash Patel sparks outrage for 'see you in Valhalla' message for Charlie Kirk. Here's why

The term ‘Valhalla’ used by the FBI chief led to confusion online about why Patel, who was raised Hindu, would reference Valhalla for Kirk, an outspoken Christian

Indian-origin FBI director Kash Patel baffled viewers by paying tribute to slain conservative influencer Charlie Kirk with the phrase “See you in Valhalla”. Patel paid tributes to the right-wing political conservative activist on Friday morning during a press conference in which he announced that the FBI had apprehended a suspect, Tyler Robinson.“To my friend Charlie Kirk. Rest now, brother. We have the watch. And I’ll see you in Valhalla,” said Patel. The 45-year-old FBI director was speaking alongside Utah Governor Spencer Cox, 50, to deliver updates on the investigation. The phrase ‘Valhalla’ immediately sparked interest on social media. In Norse mythology, “Valhalla” is depicted as an immense hall where fallen warriors are welcomed after death, according to Daily Beast. It refers to the ‘Hall of the Slain’, an enormous hall located in Asgard ruled by the god Odin. Here, they feast, fight, and prepare for the end of the world, known as Ragnarok, embodying a heroic and eternal afterlife.ALSO READ: Who is Anastasia J. Casey? Patel was labelled as incompetent for the major confusion and has now come under the fire over his ‘valhalla’ comment. Patel, whose roots trace back to Gujarat, was born and raised in a Hindu family though he does not speak about his religion publicly.Live Events“Indian guy saying that he’ll see a Christian in Valhalla is some confused theology,” wrote one commenter on X. One account commented, “I feel a little guilty for laughing about this, but Kash Patel invoking Valhalla is funny on several levels.”“We don’t believe in valhalla you dork. This is so not the time or place to be cute,” wrote another. Another pointed out that FBI actually did nothing to nab Tyler Robinson, the suspected shooter who killed Charlie Kirk. He was turned in by his father and Kash Patel came to the press conference making the cringiest comment.ALSO READ: Why is Trump’s face ‘drooping’ as latest photos of US President spark health rumours? Check signsMany social media users also came out in support of Kash Patel saying it is a common saying in military apart from the Valhalla part. Patel’s tribute merges two longstanding military farewells. The phrase “We have the watch” originates from a Navy retirement tradition, where the poem The Watch is recited, including the line, “Shipmate you stand relieved. We have the watch.” Meanwhile, “Until Valhalla” is widely used by Marines as an homage to fallen comrades, honoring their sacrifice and service. But interestingly, neither Patel nor Kirk have served in the military. Why Kash Patel faced scrutinyBefore the detention of Tyler Robinson, Patel faced the wrath of current and former FBI officials for his inaccurate statement that a suspect had been caught in Charlie Kirk’s shooting. On Wednesday, Patel announced on social media that a person responsible for the incident had been taken into custody, Reuters reported. The claim was contradicted by local officials. The FBI later clarified that two individuals had been detained for questioning and later released.ALSO READ: ‘What a piece of…’: Cincinnati restaurant Lucius Q cuts ties with owner, suffers big damage after controversial Charlie Kirk commentThe press conference was held after a suspect in the shooting, Tyler Robinson, was detained.
