President Donald Trump reacted to a in Michigan, calling it an attack against Christianity.
“I have been briefed on the horrendous shooting that took place at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in Grand Blanc, Michigan,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
At least nine individuals are injured and two died as a result of the shooting.
The shooting took place early Sunday morning, after authorities said the 40-year-old male suspect from Burton, Michigan, drove his vehicle through the doors of the church, exited his vehicle and fired several rounds, allegedly using an assault rifle, at individuals in the church. Police said they are still investigating the motive as well as the FBI.
A fire erupted at the church after the shooting and is now out; police authorities expect to find more victims once the scene is cleared.
Police are executing search warrants to search the Burton man’s home, and the FBI is sending 100 agents to help with the search. Police add that there is no threat to the public.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints about the shooting, saying they are working with local law enforcement as the investigation continues:
“We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of prayers and concern from so many people around the world. In moments of sorrow and uncertainty, we find strength and comfort through our faith in Jesus Christ. Places of worship are meant to be sanctuaries of peacemaking, prayer and connection,” said Doug Andersen, a spokesperson for the church. “We pray for peace and healing for all involved.”
The names of the victims have not been released at this time.
“This is a heartbreaking and tragic day for our community,” Sheriff Chris Swanson said. “We are working closely with Grand Blanc Township Police and other local, state and federal partners to bring answers and provide support for the victims, their families, and everyone impacted by this senseless act of violence.”
A Henry Ford Health spokesperson said that the Henry Ford Genesys Hospital is caring for the patients injured in the shooting:
“Our hearts go out to our patients, their families, and the community—including the people worshipping when the tragic act of violence occurred,” the statement reads. “Our team has cared for 9 people injured in the shooting and fire so far. Our hospital is fully staffed with experienced caregivers, and we are grateful to our team members who continue to care for all our patients at Henry Ford Genesys Hospital. Counselors and spiritual care are available to provide confidential support and counseling services for our patients and team members.
This shooting is the 324th mass shooting that occurred this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive.
Sunday’s shooting follows after Russel Sunday’s shooting follows after Russel M. Nelson, the president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, died on Saturday.
