A new study has discovered an unexpected link between the use of Viagra and divorce.
Researchers and clinicians say the pill, which restores sexual function, may be causing straying and marriage collapse.
This has given birth to what is called ‘gray divorce’ among people 50 and older. The divorce rate for that group doubled between 1990 and 2015, according to research published by the Pew Research Center.
So what the research found is that when couples are together, they adopt some unspoken compromises over the years. So, for example, if the sex is not as great as it was, they keep plodding along because the companionship or marriage in general becomes a priority. There is an acceptance of erectile dysfunction in this case.
When it is restored, one partner may expect renewed passion, while the other may feel pressured or merely uninterested.
That could lead to older men finding solace in the arms of younger women to satiate their restored libido.
The mismatch is not helped by the complexities of midlife women’s sexuality. Things such as hormonal changes, medical conditions and the like may have an effect on desire and arousal.
While Viagra isn’t entirely to blame – divorces are complicated – you can see how relationship dynamics can change when the sexuality which was gone is back.
