I am ready for the challenge — Donnarumma set to become Man City No.1 for many years

Manchester City new boy Gianluigi Donnarumma is relishing the chance to be the club’s long-term replacement for Ederson.

Gianluigi Donnarumma has welcomed the competition with James Trafford to be Manchester City’s number one goalkeeper.

The 26-year-old was a surprise £30 million signing from Paris Saint-Germain on transfer deadline day. The move came just a month after City had signed Trafford for £27 million from Burnley.

Trafford had displaced Ederson as Pep Guardiola’s first-choice keeper after the Brazilian left for Fenerbahce, but he had a shaky start to the season, including a mistake that led to a goal in City’s 2-0 loss to Tottenham.

Speaking about competing for the starting spot, Donnarumma said;

“I’m happy because competition is good for everyone. I can’t wait to meet [James], and I can’t wait to meet my new teammates.

“We have to be a strong and united group with people who care for each other, and that is the key to success. Together we can achieve great success.”

The Italian goalkeeper, who trained with the squad for the first time on Thursday, expressed his excitement for his new club.

“I want to enjoy everything, I want to get to know the city and get to know new people and my new teammates.

“I’m really looking forward to discovering the environment of the stadium, and I can’t wait to take to the pitch and hear the sounds of the stadium and hear the support.”

City welcome city rivals Manchester United to the Etihad on Sunday evening, and it remains unclear whether Donnarumma will be handed his debut or Trafford will continue in goal.
