Retail Sales Decreased 0.6% In May 2025

After adjusting for the retail sales rate of inflation – measured at 0.9% in May – the overall volume of retail sales index decreased 0.6% when compared to May 2024, according to the recently released Retail Sales Index.

A Government spokesperson said, “The Ministry of Economy and Labour released the May 2025 Retail Sales Index publication.

“May’s volume of retail sales index decreased 0.6 per cent compared to last year. In value terms, retail sales increased to an estimated $115.1 million.

“Five of the seven sectors recorded year-over-year volume index increases in May 2025:

Food Stores’ sales volume increased 1.7 per cent.

Motor Vehicle Stores’ sales volume rose 8.1 per cent.

Service Stations’ sales volume rose 1.1 per cent.

The sales volume for Building Material Stores increased 7.1 per cent.

The sales volume at Apparel Stores increased 1.8 per cent.

“The following two sectors decreased in sales volume compared to the previous year:

The sales volume for Liquor Stores decreased 1.7 per cent.

Sales volume decreased 6.5 per cent in the All-Other Store Types sector [comprising stores selling household items, furniture, appliances, electronics, pharmaceuticals and tourist-related goods].

“Selected overseas declarations increased 8.0 per cent compared to May 2024.”
