25 years and counting: U19 basketball leagues back on the court

With a long-standing history of over 25 years, the national under-19 basketball boys and girls leagues will continue its momentum starting 21 Sept.

The leagues’ format is a round-robin, where all teams play each other before the top four teams advance to a single-elimination play-off knockout.

Games are set to be played at John Gray High School gymnasium and the Cayman International School gym.

“The under-19 leagues is a critical catchment for athletes who are too old for the under-16 league but not quite ready for the competition level of the national adult leagues,” said Collin Anglin, Cayman Islands Basketball Association president.

“This allows athletes to continue to hone their skills and also assist them in their overseas recruitment efforts,” he added.

Anglin said the league has a robust statistics system that tracks 10 different statistical areas for every player, adding that this data is available for verification by overseas schools and organisations.

He added, “Games are also filmed so that athletes can create their highlight reels to audition for potential schools.”

Anglin confirmed that these elements of the leagues align with one of the association’s objectives, which aims to “provide support and assist in preparation for potential college athletes”.
