GECOM corrects Gazetted elections results following vote replication error

Kaieteur News – The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has issued a formal correction to its previously gazetted declaration of results from the September 1, 2025, General and Regional Elections, following the discovery of replicated vote counts for the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) in two separate regions.

The error, which appeared in the Official Gazette released on Tuesday, showed the PPP/C receiving the exact same number of votes, 9,938, in both Regions 9 and 10.

The discrepancy saw immediate concerns being raised among opposition members and social media users, many of whom questioned the statistical improbability of such identical results.

Among the first to highlight the issue was Amanza Walton-Desir, leader of the Forward Guyana Movement, who posted on her Facebook page: “So, the PPP got the same number of votes in Regions 9 and 10? The exact number?? What are the odds? Seriously???!!! (And mind you the Official Gazette is THE authoritative source for citation).”

Also weighing in was the Mayor of Linden and A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) member, who pointed out that, “With the official gazetting of these results, GECOM has effectively handed the PPP one additional seat. In doing so, GECOM has taken away a seat that rightfully belonged to APNU in Region 10 and transferred it to the PPP.”

In response, GECOM in a statement on Thursday acknowledged the error and published an amended version of the gazetted results. The commission clarified that the Chief Election Officer had “erroneously” replicated the PPP/C’s Region 9 vote total for Region 10, but emphasised that the mistake had no impact on the allocation of seats.

“This error, which generated a buzz on social media, did not impact seat allocation. In this regard, it is of crucial importance to note that the error has already been remedied by way of the attached amendment to the gazetted results of the elections,” GECOM said.

The official amendment, published under the Representation of the People Act (Cap. 1:03), makes two corrections:

The number of votes recorded for the PPP/C in Geographical Constituency No. 10 has been corrected from 9,938 to 4,260.
The first name of a newly elected member of the National Assembly for Geographic Constituency No. 3 was corrected from “Vickash” to the accurate spelling “Vikash.”

GECOM stated that all other particulars of the declared Geographical Constituencies results remain unchanged.
