Fears grow for amateur sailor, 57, who vanished off the Devon coast in his boat

FEARS are growing for an amateur sailor who vanished off the Devon coast in his boat.

Guy Nelson, 57, was last known to be sailing near the Drake’s Island area of Plymouth on September 8, police say.

Nelson, from Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, was last spotted on CCTV in Dominick, Cornwall just three days before.

It’s believed he set off on a tour of the Cornish and Devon coasts in his boat, called the Swallow, from Plymouth.

Guy is described as a white male, 5ft 10ins tall, of medium build, with short curly brown hair and brown eyes.

Devon and Cornwall Police described said the sailor often wears glasses, a black t-shirt and jeans.

The force have also released another image of the sailor showing him with a dark beard.

In a statement, a police spokesperson said: “We continue to be concerned for the welfare of 57-year-old Guy Nelson and are issuing a more recent picture of him.

“Guy, from Leamington Spa, was last known to be in or around the Drake’s Island area of Plymouth on Monday 8 September.

“Guy had been sailing around Cornwall and Devon on his boat named Swallow and it is believed it was Guy’s intention to sail from Plymouth along the coast, but he has not been heard from since.

“He had previously been in St Dominick in Cornwall, where the new picture was taken on Friday 5 September.

“Guy has no known links to Devon and Cornwall other than sailing in the area.”

Police are urging anyone who may have seen Guy or know of his whereabouts to call 999 immediately, quoting log 852.

Drake’s Island has a rich history from the 12th century onwards and was a key strategic and refuge location during the Tudor period as well as playing a key role in the English Civil War.

It was named after the famous English explorer Sir Francis Drake who set sail from the island in 1577 to travel the world.

Morgan Phillips purchased the island in 2019 and had ambitious plans to turn the land into a holiday resort.

But the island, which was purchased for £6 million, was put up for sale again in 2024.
