Jodie Whittaker, the Thirteenth Doctor of the massive franchise Doctor Who, revealed that she would take the role back in a heartbeat. Whittaker, who portrayed the titular character of the series from 2018 to 2022, was also the first woman ever to take on the mantle of the iconic figure.
According to The Sunday Times, Whittaker stated that, if asked, she “wouldn’t hesitate” to return. She recalled how happy she was the first time she went back.
She further elaborated that it didn’t matter how much time had passed. If someone wrote her into the show, even 20 years from now, she would agree to it.
“The second I got to Cardiff, I felt like I was home, even though it’s a different studio, a different Tardis. It’s just my absolutehappiness, Doctor Who. If someone said to me in 20 years, ‘I’ve written an episode and the 13th comes back,’ I just wouldn’t hesitate. It’s absolute joy.”
What Jodie Whittaker’s Return Could Mean For Doctor Who
Being the first woman to ever play the Doctor, Whittaker will always hold a special place in the Doctor Who franchise. Her return, even if just a cameo, could open a lot of doors for the long-running science fiction show.
The Thirteenth Doctor’s departure was very bittersweet. While many viewers were sad to see her go, especially in such a gruesome way, her exit showed her more or less at peace, with her last words being, “Tag, you’re it.” Although she would be missed, fans were also excited at the same time because of the highly anticipated return of David Tennant.
If she returns the way that Tennant did, she would become a leading character again. Or, if she shows up briefly as a guest star, the show would have to explain how she didn’t cease to exist or where she was after all this time. Either of these possibilities would bring an entirely different element to the table.
