PTINamakkal: Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief and actor Vijay addresses supporters during a rally, in Namakkal, Tamil Nadu.

At least 31 people, including children, are feared dead after a stampede-like situation broke out during Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam chief and actor-politician Vijay’s rally in Tamil Nadu’s Karur on Saturday, reported TOI.Moreover, PTI reported citing Health Minister Ma Subramanian that 49 individuals from the event have been hospitalised for treatment, while 29 fatalities have been confirmed. The incident occurred when the crowd, which had gathered in massive numbers to hear Vijay speak, began surging uncontrollably. As the pressure mounted, several attendees, including party workers and children, collapsed and fainted. Standing atop his campaign bus, he threw water bottles into the crowd to help those in distress. I express my condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones in this event. I wish them mental strength during this difficult time. I pray that the injured recover soon,” the prime minister wrote.Meanwhile, in a quick reaction, CM MK Stalin, who is expected to visit Karur on Sunday to asses the situation, said reports from site were deeply concerning. “The news coming from Karur is worrying. I have instructed former Minister @V_Senthilbalaji, Honorable Minister @Subramanian_Ma, and the District Collector to ensure that immediate medical treatment is provided to the members of the public who were caught in the crowd and admitted to hospitals,” Stalin said in a post on X. The chief minister has also directed Minister Anbil Mahesh to visit the site of the tragedy to provide additional assistance. “I have also directed Minister @Anbil_Mahesh, from nearby Tiruchi district, to provide the necessary assistance on an urgent basis. Additionally, I have spoken with the ADGP to take prompt measures to restore the situation there.
