Arsenal will travel to England’s north-east on Sunday in the hopes of stamping some authority on its Premier League title pursuit with a win over Newcastle United. The Gunners shot down the Magpies when they last met in May and have an opportunity to bag successive wins over this opponent for the first time in nearly four years.
Eddie Howe has made recent matchups between these teams significantly more competitive, with Newcastle winning three of their last four encounters. However, the Toon Army is struggling to get off the ground this season after seeing their side undergo an unexpected makeover in the summer months.
After losing at home to Barcelona in the Champions League, Newcastle dropped more Premier League points following a 0-0 stalemate at Bournemouth on Saturday. Arsenal, meanwhile, scraped a point at home to Manchester City last Sunday when Gabriel Martinelli netted almost 90 minutes after Erling Haaland opened the scoring.
Mikel Arteta was pleased to see Bukayo Saka come off the bench to mark his return from injury, and he’ll be in the running to start at St. James’ Park. The same could be said for Martinelli and Eberechi Eze after the attacking duo impressed as substitutes, while Harvey Barnes or Anthony Elanga could make their way into Howe’s XI.
