Motorists have been warned of delays on the M6 this weekend as work is carried out on a HS2 viaduct. This will eventually be used for high-speed trains which will go over the motorway near Birmingham Airport, Birmingham Business Park and the NEC. And as work is carried out this weekend, a diversion has been put in place for motorists. HS2 has previously said the planned closure would run from 03:00 BST on Saturday. And traffic is building on the approach to the closure this afternoon. Traffic monitoring site Inrix said: “M6 Southbound closed, slow traffic due to roadworks ongoing until late Sunday evening from J4A M42 J8 to J4 M42 J7 ( Coleshill ). “Northbound is also closed within J4 ( Coleshill ). Installation of HS2 Bridges.” It added: “The M42 J7 exit slip road onto the M6 southbound is also closed. Diversion – via the exit and entry slips.” HS2 said drivers travelling northbound on the M6 should exit at junction 4, join the M42 southbound and leave at the junction 6 roundabout, on to the M42 northbound. They would then use the junction 7 slip road to rejoin the M6 northbound. People travelling southbound on the M6 will be diverted at junction 4A onto the M42 northbound and carry on up to junction 9. They will come off at the roundabout and rejoin the M42 southbound to eventually access the M6 southbound. And drivers wanting to join the M6 southbound from the M42 at junction 7A will continue northbound up to junction 9, before rejoining the M42 southbound and getting on the M6 at its junction 3A.
