Searching for some family entertainment this autumn? New Lanark World Heritage Site, a unique 18th-century mill village sitting alongside the picturesque River Clyde less than an hour from Glasgow and Edinburgh , is providing what it describes as an exciting blend of “creativity, mystery and starlit wonder”. Founded in 1785 with a focus on philanthropy, education and the welfare of mill workers, New Lanark became a model for industrial communities worldwide in the 19th and 20th centuries. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001, with ongoing conservation and promotion managed by New Lanark Trust in partnership with South Lanarkshire Council and Historic Environment Scotland. Whether you fancy a hands-on crafting session, supernatural thrills, or stargazing, the village says there’s something remarkable planned for all. Enthusiasts of the supernatural can anticipate an engaging investigation at the historic mill with The Scottish Ghost Company. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore the enigmas, shadows and tales of this UNESCO-listed site after nightfall, reports Glasgow Live . Happening on Saturday, November 1, the adults-only event will run from 7.30 pm until midnight and includes tea, coffee, cake upon arrival, and refreshments throughout. Tickets also feature 15 percent off dinner at Mill One Restaurant. Fashion enthusiasts can create and craft their own personalised Harris Tweed handbag in a one-hour session. Participants can select colours, choose their tweed, and add finishing touches with professional guidance. Sessions on Saturday, November 1, are available at 12.30 pm, 2 pm, and 3 pm on the Mill Shop Floor. Tickets include tools, materials, the handbag to take home, and tea and cake (Ages over 12 – under-16s must be accompanied by a paying adult). For astronomy enthusiasts, Dark Sky Ranger Elizabeth Tindal will guide an evening under the stars. The event on Saturday, 15 November, runs from 7 pm until 9.30 pm at the Theatre and Rooftop Garden. Guests will begin with storytelling and science in the historic theatre before heading to the rooftop garden for stargazing, rounded off with hot beverages and cake. Visitors are welcome to bring their own telescopes or cameras, but are advised to dress warmly and wear sturdy shoes due to uneven or cobbled areas. In the event of poor weather, the session may be cancelled and refunds provided. Organisers suggest making a weekend of it, with accommodation available at the New Lanark Mill Hotel, allowing guests to explore the site fully. Guests can enjoy leisure facilities including a pool, sauna and steam room, a light breakfast buffet, 15 percent off Spa treatments, and access to the Visitor Attraction and Mill Shop, with prices starting from £79 per person (based on date and availability, valid October until March).
