Netflix has revealed an exciting update for crime thriller enthusiasts as an official first glimpse has been shared for a new project that had experienced significant delays. The Rip, featuring Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, was helmed by Joe Carnahan and boasts other major stars including The Walking Dead’s Steven Yeun. Carnahan spoke to Tudum about the powerful friendship between Affleck and Damon, who have been mates since primary school. He revealed: “Working with Matt and Ben and having two, distinctly talented filmmakers, as both creative allies and the studio heads, wound up being the best of both worlds. “I’ve never had as easy an experience on a movie as I had on The Rip. They took exceptionally good care of me and backed my decisions every step of the way.” The picture is scheduled for January 16 and follows a team of Miami police officers who come under attack after uncovering millions in cash in a rundown stash house. When external forces discover the scale of the haul, everything comes into question – including the loyalty within the squad. Carnahan detailed how the concept for the picture “came out of a deeply personal experience that my friend went through, both as a father and as head of tactical narcotics for the Miami Dade police department”. He continued: “It’s inspired in part by his life and then, by my enduring love for those classic ’70’s cop thrillers that really valued the character and interpersonal relationships and became touchstones of that era. “Films like Serpico and Prince of The City and more recently, Michael Mann’s Heat.” The title refers to a phrase used by Miami police when confiscating items from criminals. First-look images have also been released, showcasing Yeun collaborating with Damon and Affleck as they stumble upon a significant finding. This follows the announcement in June that the film’s release would be postponed, originally scheduled for this autumn. No explanation was provided for the delay in the release date until 2026. The Rip will air on Netflix on January 16
