Eddie Nketiah received a few grateful texts from his Arsenal connections after scoring a late winner for Crystal Palace over Liverpool on Saturday.

The Eagles stunned the previously unbeaten Premier League champions, edging Arne Slot’s side 2-1 at Selhurst Park.

Ismaila Sarr put the home side ahead after just nine minutes but Federico Chiesa looked to have rescued a point for the Reds with a goal in the 87th minute.

Nketiah was the hero, though, scoring seven minutes into stoppage time to secure a memorable win for Palace with a brilliantly taken strike.

Liverpool remain top of the table having won their first five games of the Premier League season, but defeat does provide encouragement for all other teams with title ambitions.

One of those sides is Arsenal, the club Nketiah joined the Eagles from last year, and he has had some thanks for his fine work against Liverpool.

‘I had a few thank you messages to be honest,’ said Nketiah. ‘Yeah, a couple of the staff messaged me but I’m fully focused on life here and want to do well and help the team as much as possible.’

Palace manager Oliver Glasner said of Nketiah, who was only making his second appearance of the season due to a hamstring injury: ‘It’s good to have him back.

‘At the end of last season, he showed at the end of last season that he can score many goals. He scored two against Wolves in our last home game. It’s good. He’s so ambitious and is working very hard, which he got the reward for today.

‘One of our slogans is: If you invest, you get something back. It’s one of the credences in my life.

‘Eddie is investing so much, and he got the reward with the matchwinner in front of our fans, getting celebrated. Well done, Eddie.’

Nketiah returned the compliments to his boss, saying: ‘He’s amazing. I think he’s created a really good group, a really good togetherness in the group. I feel like we’re all fighting, we all want to push and do well.

‘It’s a really nice environment and a good place for young players to improve and develop, that’s what you want to do, work every day and achieve great things together.’

Crystal Palace are now the only unbeaten team in the Premier League, having won three and drawn three of their first six contests.

Beating the champions took them to second in the table, three points behind the Reds as Glasner continues to seriously impress as Eagles boss after winning the FA Cup last season.

‘What makes me really proud today is we conceded the equaliser in the 90th minute,’ said Glasner. ‘Very often, the momentum changes and you lose a game. We kept our heads up, played forward and turned the momentum again. We got the game-winner. That makes me really proud of the group.

‘Also, when I see Will Hughes wins the first header, Jeff Lerma [had the long throw], and Eddie Nketiah scores the goal… three players who came on. That’s why it was such a team effort today.

‘I’m really proud and delighted about the performance.’
