Eddie Nketiah discovered the magnitude of his last-gasp winner against Liverpool once he returned to the Crystal Palace dressing room. He unzipped his bag, reached for his phone and was greeted by a series of congratulatory texts on his lock screen. When asked if they came from the Arsenal camp, Nketiah said of his old club: “I had a few thank you messages to be honest. Yeah, a couple of the staff messaged me but I’m fully focused on life here and want to do well and help the team as much as possible.” Beaming with joy, Nketiah swiftly clarified none of the messages were from Mikel Arteta . The clinical stoppage-time strike means Palace are now the only remaining unbeaten side in the top-flight this season. Not only that but they have now gone 18 matches in all competitions since their last defeat – matching a club-record streak set way back in 1969. The 26-year-old is adamant the historic run wouldn’t have been possible without FA Cup-winning boss Oliver Glasner . He said on the Austrian: “He’s amazing. I think he’s created a really good group, a really good togetherness in the group. I feel like we’re all fighting, we all want to push and do well. “It’s a really nice environment and a good place for young players to improve and develop, that’s what you want to do, work every day and achieve great things together.” The Eagles were left to rue their lack of conviction when Federico Chiesa looked to have snatched a point for Liverpool with just minutes to play. Palace pummelled Liverpool before the interval and on another day, they could have been six goals ahead had it not been for both the brilliance of Alisson and the wastefulness of Jean-Philippe Mateta. Nketiah claims Palace knew they could damage the champions, explaining: “We believed that we could hurt them. We showed in the Community Shield that we had chances and that we can create chances against anyone. “We were really confident going into the game, we knew it was going to be tough but I think we showed the quality we have and that was a really strong performance.” When Liverpool turned the screw in search of a late winner, Eagles captain Marc Guehi stood tall and once again defended valiantly . His assured display at the heart of Glasner’s backline provided the Reds with another painful reminder of his quality. Nketiah said of his captain: “He’s top. I think Marc’s qualities on the pitch speak for themselves but off the pitch, he’s really important for the team. “He’s a really good captain, a really good leader. We’re happy to have him here and happy that he’s here contributing. “We’ve got no questions about Marc’s focus or determination, he’s proved that throughout his career. We’re happy to have him here and hopefully he can keep helping us this season.” Next up for Palace, a European trip to Poland to face Dynamo Kyiv in Poland beckons. Nketiah claims the FA Cup winners have belief they can do the unthinkable and go the distance in the Conference League. He continued: “Every competition we enter, our aim is to try and win it. Obviously it’s a really good opportunity for us, playing in Europe for the team’s first time and having a European night here is going to be amazing. “We want to keep working, keep progressing and hopefully we can deliver another trophy to the fans. That’s what they deserve.” Join our new WhatsApp community! Click this link to receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
