The department store is closing the branch in Dudley Street after 96 years trading on Saturday afternoon with the loss of an undisclosed number of jobs. When the retailer announced the sad news bosses explained that the closure is being done as part of moves to update the business.
Since then former employees calling in for a one last look round, social media users have been commenting online giving a mixed reaction, as well as almost 700 supporters putting their names to a petition in a bid to save the branch which is the latest high street name to depart as retailers battle with online trading, competition and the economy.
Davina Abbott, aged 39, from Penn, started the parliamentary petition Save Marks & Spencer in Wolverhampton – Relocate Don’t Close which has so far attracted more than 680 signatures due to the heartbreak among some residents and shoppers over the decision. And she said that the city was already suffering.
In response Express & Star reader PJW Holland posted: ” M&S are just making excuses. They have removed all their quality brands and replaced them. Their food is good but there is absolutely no way you could do a full weekly shop in their stores.
