A grandmother from eastern China has shattered age stereotypes, becoming an internet sensation for her graceful and energetic skateboarding skills, earning the affectionate nickname “Chasing Wind Girl” from netizens nationwide.
Grandma Liu, 68, originally from Shandong province and now living in Chengdu, Sichuan province, discovered her passion for skateboarding in February 2022.
Accompanying her daughter, surnamed Dong, to select a skateboard, Liu was instantly captivated by the sport after trying it herself.
“I can’t sit still, and most of my friends are quite young. One day, my daughter’s friend suggested she pick out a skateboard. My daughter said, ‘Mum, let me show you something new,’ and I replied, ‘Sure!’”
“As soon as I saw it, I thought, this looks like so much fun! I tried it once and didn’t fall. Then my daughter encouraged me to learn,” she told China Youth Daily.
Dong later bought all the necessary gear and even created a social media account for Liu, named Mimihu, which has since attracted over 10,000 followers on RedNote.
One of Liu’s most popular posts showcases her skating while proudly declaring: “Reject labels, be a versatile granny! Grannies can be both sweet and cool!”
That video alone garnered over 42,000 likes.
When she first began, Liu often fell and sustained injuries. However, she remained undeterred, consistently practising and adjusting her posture until she mastered the basic movements.
To ensure her safety, Liu always wears protective gear before stepping onto her board. Today, her skills allow her to glide with “a stylish and free posture.”
She frequently practises at Dong’an Lake and Qinglong Lake in Chengdu.
“Dong’an Lake has a wonderful environment. The road surface is smooth, the scenery is beautiful, and many areas are fenced for safety,” she shared.
Her love for skateboarding has also become a family affair. Her daughter is her most devoted supporter, and their mother-daughter skateboarding sessions have become a heartwarming sight in the community.
“For many young people in big cities, life may seem like a 9-to-5 routine. But for Chengdu locals, life truly begins when the sun goes down,” Liu shared.
Her philosophy resonates deeply with netizens, who express admiration for her vibrant approach to ageing.
One person commented: “Real age isn’t just the number on your ID card; it’s your state of mind.”
Another echoed: “This is what true love for life looks like. She is 68 and still so youthful!”
“This is precisely the kind of elder life I aspire to. So inspiring!” wrote a third.
