Speaking to reporters after visiting the injured at the Government Medical College Hospital in Karur in the wee hours of Sunday, Mr. Stalin, who air-dashed to Tiruchi from Chennai and reached by road, said he had ordered the Inquiry Commission — led by retired High Court judge Aruna Jagadeesan — to investigate the incident.

To a question on whether Mr. Vijay would be arrested in connection with the tragedy, Mr. Stalin said it would all depend on the findings of the report.

When pointed out that the Commission of Inquiry was time consuming exercise, the Chief Minister said the Inquiry Commission has been asked to submit its findings as early as possible.

Mr. Stalin offered no answer when asked whether the allocation of a relatively small road to the meeting was a reason for the death of several persons.

Expressing shock over the deaths, the Chief Minister said he was saddened to learn the death of 39 persons, who took part in a political event. The incident was unprecedented in terms of political events. It should never happen again. As soon as he came to know the situation, he ordered the Ministers in the nearest areas to rush to the Karur Medical College Hospital to offer all help to the affected.

Earlier, Mr. Stalin placed wreath on the bodies of the victims. He also held a meeting with the health, police, revenue and other officials on the treatment extended to those injured.
