‘Convenience of being 5 minutes away from the terminals is unmatched for travelers’

Peter Idoko is the general manager of Legend Hotel Lagos Airport, Curio Collection by Hilton, a unique brand of the Hilton chain.

In this interview, he speaks to Obinna Emelike on the hotel, which has redefined convenience and luxury in the Nigeria hotel market, the world-class service and facility offerings, the feats since its opening seven years ago, what really makes the Curio brand unique, why travelers can bet on the hotel, among others. Excerpts…

On October 5, 2025, Legend Hotel Lagos Airport, Curio Collection by Hilton will be seven years in business. How has it been since then?

It has been an incredible journey of growth and learning. Over the past seven years, we’ve had the privilege of welcoming guests from all over the world, building lasting relationships, and becoming a trusted part of Nigeria’s hospitality landscape. Like any journey, there have been challenges along the way, but each has strengthened our commitment to excellence and inspired us to continuously improve.

Do you think that the brand resonates with the Nigerian guest and why?

Yes, it absolutely does. Nigerian guests value authenticity, warm hospitality, and experiences that feel personal, and that is exactly what our hotel represents. Our guests tell us they feel seen, heard, and cared for — not just accommodated — and that connection has helped us resonate strongly within the Nigerian market.

Of course, your stylish hotel is Nigeria’s first internationally branded airport hotel. How has the hotel taken advantage of its airport location in terms of patronage?

Our location gives us a unique advantage: proximity to the airport while still offering a full upscale experience. For travelers, especially those on tight schedules, the convenience of being 5 minutes away from the terminals is unmatched. We’ve built on this by creating services like Day Use, Flight lounge access and curated dining experiences to meet the needs of both transit and long-stay guests.

Again, it is the first Curio Collection by Hilton property in West Africa. Has that in any way impacted on patronage, considering the huge Hilton loyalty programme?

Definitely. Being part of Hilton’s global network and part of Curio Collection by Hilton has been a huge advantage. Hilton Honors members see us as a trusted choice in Nigeria, and many guests specifically choose us because they can redeem or earn loyalty points. This global reach, combined with our local authenticity, has driven steady patronage.

There seems to be a perception that the hotel is for a certain class of guests. What are you doing to support or correct that perception?

While we do offer upscale experiences, our doors are open to everyone. We are intentional about creating packages, dining offers, and event spaces that appeal to a wide range of guests, from business travelers to families and leisure seekers. We want people to see Legend Hotel not just as a place to stay, but as a destination for memorable experiences.

From a brand perspective, what makes the Curio unique among other Hilton brands?

Each Curio Collection property has an individual story, while providing the benefits of Hilton. For us at Legend, that means blending our unique location and Nigerian hospitality with global quality. It’s the perfect balance of local authenticity and international excellence.

For those who have not visited or still don’t see reasons to visit, what are the service and facility offerings that set the hotel apart from its peers?

We offer a unique combination: ultra-modern accommodation, world-class dining, and the unmatched convenience of being next to the airport. Our event spaces cater to everything from intimate gatherings to large conferences, and our leisure facilities — from the pool, gym, steam room to our restaurant and bar ensure guests can relax and recharge. Beyond the facilities, it’s our people who truly set us apart; the warmth and professionalism of our team consistently leave lasting impressions.

Is the hotel as expensive as some people assume?

Not at all. While we deliver what most people presume as premium, we are intentional about offering value at every touchpoint. We have a variety of packages, seasonal offers, and promotions that make staying with us accessible to different types of travelers. When guests experience the quality of our service and facilities, they often tell us the value far outweighs the cost.

Do you feel threatened by pipeline hotels and new opening even close to the airport, is the Curio brand strong enough for the impending stiffer competition?

With the strength of the Curio Collection brand, the uniqueness of our property, and the dedication of our team, we are confident in our ability to remain a preferred choice regardless of new openings.

In 2026, Wave Hotel Abuja Jabi, Curio Collection by Hilton will open in Jabi. How will that development impact the Curio brand in Nigeria?

The opening of another Curio Collection property in Nigeria will only strengthen the brand’s presence and recognition across the country. Together, we’ll create more opportunities for guests to experience the brand, and for Hilton Honors members to enjoy more choices locally.

Any plan for the celebration of your 7th anniversary this year?

Yes, absolutely. This milestone is not just about us — it’s about our guests, partners, and team members who have been part of this journey. We’re planning a series of activities that celebrate our legacy while looking ahead to the future. It will be a moment to say “thank you” to everyone who has walked this path with us and to share our vision for the next seven years.

How is your expansion project going. Can you share what guests should expect?

Yes, we are very excited about our expansion. The project will more than triple our current room count, ensuring we can host even more travelers. We are also building a new world-class meeting arena to strengthen our position as a hub for conferences and events in Lagos. In addition, our restaurant will be expanded to offer more dining concepts and capacity, while upgraded wellness facilities will further elevate the guest experience.

This expansion is a direct response to demand—we’ve seen guests asking for more of the Legend experience, and we are proud to deliver it in a way that positions us for the next decade of growth.
