1. Who started at quarterback for Buffalo against UConn?
University at Buffalo quarterback Gunnar Gray, starting in place of the injured Ta’Quan Roberson, engineered a fourth quarter touchdown drive to tie UConn at 17 with 59 seconds remaining in regulation. However, the Huskies (3-2) drove down the field for the game-winning field goal with six seconds left, lifting UConn to a 20-17 win over Buffalo (2-3 overall, 1-0 in Mid-American Conference play) in a nonconference contest Saturday at UB Stadium in Amherst. Gray took nearly every snap for UB. Freshman quarterback Jason Wright ran some plays in the fourth, rushing five times for 21 yards on one drive. Gray began the game hot and completed his first four passes for 28 yards on Buffalo’s opening drive. That first Bulls drive, however, resulted in no points after Gray’s pass to Patrick Clacks III on fourth-and-four from UConn’s 35 was broken up in the end zone. The Bulls’ only other touchdown came on a 63-yard run by Lamar Sperling, which tied the game at 7 in the second quarter.
2. Buffalo defensive backs vs. UConn receivers
Buffalo knew UConn receiver Skyler Bell was a key player. Marquis Cooper and Buffalo’s defensive backfield kept Bell quiet on the Huskies first drive. However, Bell found success on later drives, including UConn’s 93-yard touchdown drive for a 7-0 second quarter lead. Bell caught four passes on that scoring drive, including a 25-yard touchdown reception. UConn used motion to free up Bell from Cooper, who guarded the receiver in man on most of the snaps on the opening drive. Bell motioned again on his touchdown, moving to the left sideline and catching a 10-yard in route against Buffalo’s Koentez Bradley before beating the rest of UB’s defense into the end zone. Bulls safety Soloman Brown broke up a first quarter passed intended for Bell that he could have intercepted. Red Murdock forced his 14th fumble of his career, but UConn recovered it before running back Cam Edwards scored a touchdown for a 14-7 Huskies third quarter lead.
