Assam police warns against fake news about internet shutdown

Guwahati: The Assam Police on Friday warned against “fake messages” being circulated by mischief mongers about the internet shutdown in the state and said that people should not believe or spread such misinformation.Police said that no such thing was being planned and that action will be taken against those sharing unverified claims, which hurt the citizens. The police asked citizens to “stay alert against fake news.”Assam is restive as it mourns the mysterious death of singer Zubeen Garg last week in Singapore. Multiple FIRs have been registered across Assam against individuals allegedly linked to the incident, and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted by the state government to conduct a comprehensive probe. Musician Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, who was part of the yacht trip related to the sudden death of Zubeen Garg, was detained for questioning by the Assam SIT on Thursday.
