‘Moral policing’ banner appears and disappears in Hosur park

An anonymous banner “barring” unmarried persons into the Ramanayakkan lake park purportedly by the district police mysteriously appeared and disappeared in a jiffy here on Friday.

The large-sized banner with images of silhouetted couples crossed in red and bearing the police helpline number, and other emergency police contact numbers was found tied up to the park gate on Thursday night. However on Friday morning, walkers and public, who are regulars of the oldest park here, were taken aback by the banner claiming to be from the police, banning the entry of unmarried persons. So, was the police, that was clueless about the banner that had audaciously used the department’s logo.

Amid social media exchanges, the banner was quietly removed, leaving no clue as to who put it there and who removed it.

Speaking to The Hindu, Assistant Superintendent of Police of Hosur Akshay Anil said, it was nobody’s business to do moral policing, least of all the police. The banner was brought to the notice of the police on Friday morning through social media. The banner was quietly removed even before police got there.

“However, from the photos, we have identified the printer of the banner. We will find out who printed it and falsely used our logo. We will talk to all the printers and identify the origins of the banner,” Mr. Anil said.
