In this ACC showdown, neither team enters nationally ranked, but the Golden Bears have a better record than the Orange, at 4-3-2 overall and 1-1-1 in the ACC following their 1-0 win over UNC Asheville on Tuesday. Syracuse, meanwhile, is 3-4-2 following their 3-0 drubbing of Colgate on the same day.
Syracuse’s win on Tuesday ended a four-game rough patch for the Orange, where they struggled through three losses and a scoreless draw. That included back-to-back losses to conference opponents #8 Stanford and #19 Duke that dropped the Orange to 0-2-0 in the ACC and dead last in the standings.
Midfielder Carlos Zambrano stood out during the Orange’s win over Colgate, getting a hat trick with all three goals in the second half, separated by less than 10 minutes of regulation time. Meanwhile, head coach Ian McIntyre made program history by setting a new school record for most wins.
In Cal’s win over UNC Asheville, Alfredo Ortiz notched a second half goal — his second of the season — to give the Golden Bears the edge they held onto for the rest of the game.
Saturday will be the first meeting between the two teams.
