Lola Young’s manager, who once repped the late Amy Winehouse, suddenly pulled the “Messy” singer out of a concert in New Jersey on Friday “due to a sensitive matter,” citing her mental health.
The 24-year-old British singer was slated to perform at the Prudential Center’s star-studded Audacy’s We Can Survive show — alongside the likes of Ed Sheeran, the Goo Goo Dolls, and Shaboozey — before manager Nick Shymansky “advised” her against performing.
“Lola is very open about her mental health and there are very occasionally days where myself and my team have to take protective measures to keep her safe,” Shymansky wrote on Young’s Instagram Story.
“She is an incredible person and always takes her fans, career and performances seriously,” he continued. “I can only send huge apologies for the inconvenience caused.”
While Shymansky did not offer additional details, Young previously revealed in 2022 that she’d been diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder three years prior, and had “struggled immensely learning to accept” that part of herself.
“I have to remind my[s]elf that I am a regular f–king person, I am human and I am, like everyone, capable of incredible things,” she wrote at the time. “My mental health condition does not define me. It is my superpower. I have crazy f–king highs (mania) and immense lows and even both at the same time.”
Those who have schizoaffective disorder can experience symptoms of both schizophrenia and a mood disorder, such as depression, mania and psychosis, according to Cleveland Clinic.
