CII’s gaming body rebrands as IDGES to sharpen e-sports focus

The Indian Digital Gaming Society (IDGS), a not-for-profit body set up by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), has rebranded itself as the Indian Digital Gaming & Esports Society (IDGES), signalling a sharper focus on esports as part of India’s digital economy. The announcement came during the IDGS Annual General Meeting and Industry Interaction 2025, where senior government officials and industry leaders outlined a roadmap for the sector’s growth. The move comes in the wake of the Online Gaming Act, 2025, which outlaws real-money online games but seeks to boost esports and social gaming under a regulated framework.Sanjay Jaju, Secretary, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (I&B), said the government is committed to building a world-class ecosystem for gaming, digital media and entertainment. He underlined the rapid rise of esports in India and stressed the need to support athletes at the grassroots level to enhance the country’s global competitiveness.Jaju also referenced the Waves Conference, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi had “pushed a wave across the country,” creating momentum for growth in media, entertainment and gaming. “Gaming and esports are central to India’s creative economy,” he said.Live EventsSenthil Ranjan, Joint Secretary, Ministry of I&B, reinforced the government’s stance, highlighting ongoing efforts to build infrastructure and extend policy support. “Gaming and esports are being integrated into India’s cultural and economic fabric, positioning the country as a hub for innovation,” he said.Kaustubh Davse, Chief Advisor to the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, proposed the creation of an India Gaming Mission, modelled on the India Solar Mission, to make India a global leader in gaming and esports. He also suggested setting up a ₹500-crore fund, in collaboration with the Ministry of I&B and the Maharashtra government, to back innovation, skill development, infrastructure and investments in the sector. The meeting brought together over 60 delegates from gaming firms, esports organisations, academia and industry experts. Speakers also urged parents to support children in responsibly pursuing esports as a career option.Add as a Reliable and Trusted News Source Add Now!
