Netflix's 'Outer Banks' cancels filming in Myrtle Beach area

MYRTLE BEACH — For the third time, the Myrtle Beach area’s weather wasn’t charming.
Netflix’s “Outer Banks” appears to have canceled plans to film at the Socastee Swing Bridge on Sept. 27, said Kelly Moore of the S.C. Department of Transportation. The bridge and a section of Dick Pond Road were scheduled to be closed from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. for filming.
Stormy weather shut down the initial shoot on July 29 and another round of inclement weather canceled rescheduled filming on Aug. 14. Crews had chosen Sept. 27 for a third attempt, hoping avoid school traffic. But with showers and storms in the forecast, the bridge was open Saturday morning.
Island Adventure Watersports, which operates beneath the bridge on the Intracoastal Waterway, learned the shoot had been called off on Friday, employee David Lewis said.
At one time, “Outer Banks” had planned to use some of the Island Adventure’s equipment during filming but didn’t get to.
“We have to block off our whole schedule,” Lewis said. “As soon as they tell us, then we have to start moving people around.”
Lewis said Island Adventure was told the shoot wouldn’t be rescheduled. He emphasized that the company, which rents jet skis and boats, was operating on a normal Saturday schedule.
“We’re open for business,” he said.
A coastal adventure drama, “Outer Banks” chronicles the lives of a group of working-class teens, the Pogues, as they search for treasure and deal with a rival group of wealthy teens known as the Kooks.
Although set in North Carolina’s Outer Banks, the show has been filmed in the Charleston area since 2019. Crews are shooting the fifth season.
