Thrissur is gearing up to host the 64th edition of the State School Arts Festival, Asia’s largest such festival, from January 7 to 11. Over 14,000 students from across the State will compete in 249 events across 26 venues in and around Thrissur city.

“The government is preparing to turn the festival into a milestone. With the teamwork of 19 sub-committees, their chairpersons and conveners, and the support of the people of Thrissur, we are confident that this festival will be a grand success,” said Education Minister V. Sivankutty.

As part of the preparations, the State will use modern promotional tools, including a video campaign. The festival will strictly follow the green protocol, aiming to set an example as an eco-friendly celebration.

Accommodation for participants and officials will be arranged in schools across the city, and high-quality food will be ensured for all. Students securing an ‘A Grade’ will receive a ₹1,000 cultural scholarship from the government. Details of the Golden Cup procession will be announced soon, the Minister added.

School Olympics

The Minister also announced that the School Olympics manual is being revised, with plans to include Kalaripayattu. “Once the manual is finalised and approved as a government order, new competitions will be added to make the event even more inclusive,” Mr. Sivankutty said.

On the issue of students without a unique ID (UID), the Minister clarified: “This year, children without UID were not considered for staff fixation. But let me make it clear — no child will be denied benefits because of UID. Textbooks, uniforms, and mid-day meals will all be provided. The UID issue affects only staff posts, not children’s entitlements.”

The government has set up a high-level committee led by the General Education Secretary to explore using birth certificates as an alternative to Aadhaar and to simplify staff fixation in schools. “The committee has been asked to submit its report by October. Once we receive it, the recommendations will be placed before the Chief Minister, and amendments will be made,” Mr. Sivankutty added.
