Generosity flows at blood donation marathon

Denia has once again demonstrated its generosity during the 17th edition of the Blood Donation Marathon, held on Wednesday September 24 at the Centre Social.

Mayor Vicent Grimalt and Deputy Mayor and Public Health Councillor Rafa Carrió visited the marathon in the morning alongside other council members and sponsors. They publicly thanked residents for their response and the involvement of all participants, as well as the support of the collaborating organisations that helped make the initiative a success.

According to figures provided by the Valencian Community Transfusion Centre, a total of 100 people attended, with 85 successful blood donations, including 14 from first-time donors.

Hundreds of residents answer the call to donate

During the morning session, from 9.45am to 1.30pm, 45 people attended the Centre Social, with 35 able to donate, including seven first-time donors. In the afternoon session, from 4.45pm to 8.30pm, 55 people took part, resulting in 50 successful donations, with a further seven first-time donors.

The Denia Blood Donation Marathon was once again made possible thanks to the collaboration of numerous local organisations and businesses, which helped promote and encourage participation. Among them were: Cruz Roja, Mercat de Denia, AEHTMA, Bodega Les Freses de Jesús Pobre, Baleària, Óptica Romany, Electrodomésticos Pineda, Denia FM, Onda Cero Denia, Cope Denia, Avantcem, TV Denia, VistanovaTV, Marina Plaza and Canfali Marina Alta.

Local organisations and sponsors help make the event a success

In Spain, donated blood is used to save lives in hospitals and clinics across the country. It is essential for surgeries, emergency treatments, cancer care, and for patients with chronic conditions such as anaemia or blood disorders. Blood is carefully tested, processed, and stored by regional transfusion centres before being distributed to where it is most needed, ensuring that every donation can make a real difference to someone in urgent need.

Public Health Councillor Rafa Carrió said: “We are pleased with this response, which shows that Denia is a city with a strong collective heart. I encourage residents to continue donating blood throughout the year at the different calls organised by the Transfusion Centre, and I once again thank our sponsors and the community for their support.”
