KUCHING, Sept 27: Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Stakan chairman Dato Sim Kiang Chiok has urged Sarawakians to open their eyes and see what is happening to Penang under the administration of the Democratic Action Party (DAP).
In a statement, he warned that DAP’s performance in the state reflects what will happen to Sarawak should the opposition party gain a foothold.
“Their reserves from RM1.15 billion in 2019 have run to their lowest, to RM155.94 million, and they have been forced to take another RM100 million advance loan from the federal government just to keep their finances afloat,” he said.
Sim compared this to the words of former DAP chairman Lim Guan Eng in 2019, who said that Sarawak would go bankrupt within three years if the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) coalition continued to rule the State.
“Today, we see a Sarawak which is soaring—not only with a strong balance sheet, but also through the provision of free education, social assistance, and more for our people,” he said.
He claimed that Penang’s financial troubles stem from poor management, saying the DAP-led state government is not only seeking federal assistance but has also sharply increased land taxes after more than 30 years.
The hike, which affects nearly 370,000 landowners—including residential, industrial, commercial, and rural properties—has sparked public outcry as it cuts into household incomes and business profits.
Sim also pointed out that the Penang government still owes RM400 million to its own Penang Development Corporation from land sales that were intended to fund affordable housing.
“We must remember that Sarawak’s future lies in our own hands. Under GPS, we have already demonstrated stability and strength. The choice is clear: a strong Sarawak requires us to reject DAP and the Malayan parties it brings, and to stand firmly behind GPS.” — DayakDaily
