Immigration arrests at fire-hit Birmingham skip firm

Two men at a Birmingham skip firm were arrested on suspicion of being employed illegally. Immigration officers arrested two Pakistani males at ISL Skip Hire in Tyseley on Monday, September 22. The Redfern Road business – the scene of several fires – was served an ‘illegal working referral notice’ which informs owners they are under investigation. At the time, firefighters at the scene said conditions were “arduous” as they were faced with “many rats”. The Environment Agency ordered ISL Skip to cease operations and clear remaining waste on site. It told us three years ago that it had “suspended the operator’s permit”. BirminghamLive contacted ISL Skip this week asking about the recent arrests at the firm but we did not receive a response. A Home Office spokesperson told us: “Illegal working undermines honest employers, undercuts local wages, and fuels the criminal industry of immigration crime. Under this government, enforcement action nationwide has increased, with visits and arrests up by around 50 per cent on the previous twelve months. “We will be stepping up that action further in the year ahead.”
