People In Their 40s, 50s, And 60s Are Revealing The Modern Fashion Trends They Hate, And Wow, They Did Not Hold Back
“Crocs. IDGAF how comfy they are, they look hideous.”
Trends come and go, but not all of them win people over along the way.
That’s why we asked members of the BuzzFeed Community in their 40s, 50s, and 60s to tell us which modern fashion trends they just can’t get behind. And boy, did they deliver.
From types of shoes, to the size of clothing, to cosmetic trends, to the…well…lack of material, here are some of their responses:
1. “I absolutely detest barrel jeans. They aren’t flattering on anyone! Even models look dumb in them. I swear, clothing designers just decided to make a new jeans silhouette ‘trendy’ so women would have something new to buy.”
2. “Crop tops! When shopping for shirts, most of the selection is all crop tops, but you can’t wear those in (most) professional workplaces. Also, they just aren’t my thing, so if you don’t like this style of shirt, it’s slim pickings.”
3. “Skinny fit suits for men. Every time I see a guy wearing one, all I can do is laugh. I don’t see a fashion trend, I see a little boy who has outgrown his one and only suit, but his mommy and daddy can’t afford to buy him a new one, so he has to wear it anyway.”
4. “Crew socks. I already overheat, so why the hell would I want MORE sock plus even worse tan lines? I’ll keep my millennial ankle socks, thank you very much.”
5. “The only thing I hate is when people wear their pants halfway down their a*s, showing off their underwear.”
6. “Baggy, oversized EVERYTHING. It’s not flattering on anyone. I wish we could just get back to some classic style lines.”
7. “Blue jeans that are all torn up or ‘distressed.'”
8. “I’ve been seeing girls wearing fuzzy slippers out like they’re shoes. How did this start to be a fashion choice? They’re mixing them with sexy outfits, too. Are they going out to a club or to the kitchen for some ice cream? So weird.”
9. “Wearing New Balance. These were old people shoes. They are terrible looking shoes. Even the logo looks bad. I do not get it at all. These were shoes you would only wear in retirement walking to the mailbox to see if your social security check came.”
10. “Those long, pointy, claw-like nails. They’re so impractical for basically everything in life, and they look like claws! I promise you I had those exact shape nails with my witch’s costume as a child!”
11. “Shorts with very short inseam, with high socks pulled all the way. The complete opposite of fashion from the ’90s and 2000s.”
12. “I HATE exaggeratedly overlined lips! It looks so silly and impractical.”
13. “The well-worn tennis shoes with otherwise nice dresses and athleisure wear can die already. If you’re wearing Lululemon, I know you have the money for decent shoes.”
14. “Skinny pants of any kind; Skinny pantsuits look like static cling. Overly baggy pants. Anything retro from the 1980s — horrible fashion.”
15. “Low-waisted everything. We seriously do not want to worry about seeing your privates. Stop already!”
16. “Athleisure wear everywhere! No you do not look cute in a sports bra and leggings at a restaurant. Put on some clothes.”
17. “Backward baseball caps.”
18. “Teeny tiny sunglasses.”
19. “I really dislike the sheer, nude clothing women are wearing!”
20. “Crocs. IDGAF how comfy they are, they look hideous.”
21. “Tracksuits with rhinestone sexism emblazoned on the booty. If it’s actually ‘juicy’ you wouldn’t have to announce it.”
22. “The overly chunky sneakers (dino stompers) always look like orthopedic shoes.”
23. “Colors that aren’t colors. The unholy trinity of the pink that’s so pale it’s almost brown, the green that’s so washed out it’s almost blue, and the blue that’s so insipid it’s almost grey. It’s so, SO dull. There’s nothing pretty or colorful to look at in clothing shops anymore because of it.”
24. And lastly, “Honestly, the trend I can’t stand is the idea of fashion trends themselves. The whole system is designed to make people tear each other down, feel insecure, and then spend more money chasing ‘what’s in.’ It gives the industry exactly what it wants while making individuals feel like they’re never good enough — about their clothes, their choices, even their bodies. I’m tired of it. People should be able to wear what they like without judgment or shame.”
