Tribute to Zubeen Garg: Gauhati University Renames Performing Arts Centre, Announces Initiatives

Gauhati University has decided to rename its Centre for Performing Arts and Culture after popular singer Zubeen Garg. In the wake of his sudden demise, Gauhati University has accepted four proposals to pay respects to the late singer. “To pay tribute and preserve the timeless creations of popular singer and heartthrob of the youth Zubeen Garg, Gauhati University has accepted four proposals,” the varsity said in a post on X on Friday. In addition to the relabelling of the arts and culture centre, the following things will be done: Gauhati University will install his statue on the campus to pay tribute to the late singer.A coffee table book comprising biographical accounts of Garg’s life and creative journey will be published.In order to inspire young artistes, a new category of Zubeen’s Songs will be added to the singing competition during the university’s inter-college youth festival. The renowned singer passed away on September 19 by drowning in the sea in Singapore. In his honor, Gauhati University on Friday announced a series of initiatives to immortalise the memory of Assam’s iconic singer, composer, and cultural icon, Zubeen Garg, who left for the heavenly abode. Speaking on the announcement, Prof. Nani Gopal Mahanta, Vice Chancellor of Gauhati University, said, “Zubeen Garg was not just an artist; he was an emotion that united Assam and gave voice to the deepest aspirations of its people. By renaming our Centre for Performing Arts and Culture in his honour and instituting these initiatives, Gauhati University seeks to preserve his creative spirit and inspire future generations to carry forward his legacy of music, courage, and cultural pride.” Meanwhile, due to the tragic demise of Assam’s cultural icon and popular singer Zubeen Garg, the state government has set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to conduct a detailed and transparent probe into the circumstances leading to his death.
