There has been a lot of buzz over Virat Kohli’s future in international cricket after he suddenly called time on his celebrated Test career in May 2025 following his retirement from T20I cricket last year. Since the Indian cricket team is going through a transition phase, Virat Kohli’s every step is on the radar.
The former Indian captain is currently training hard at Lord’s in London to keep himself game-ready, as he is expected to travel to Australia for the three-match ODI series next month. However, some recent reports claimed that Indian chief selector Ajit Agarkar tried to get in touch with Kohli over his future plans, but he didn’t give any clarity.

Even though there were speculations that India’s upcoming Australia tour will be Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s last dance, as the team management wants to prepare the plans for the ICC World Cup 2027. However, both Kohli and Rohit have recently cleared the test and are ready for the Australia tour.

Meanwhile, a major update has emerged from the Indian camp as speculation continues over Virat Kohli’s future. The selection committee has reportedly confirmed that the dashing right-handed batter will remain in the ODI team as long as he makes himself available for selection.
Virat Kohli yet to clarify plans with Ajit Agarkar, future remains uncertain
As reported by Revsportz, Kohli has not officially informed Ajit Agarkar about his plans, leaving his future uncertain. But there is no communication gap between the chief selector and Kohli. The selection committee is just seeking clarity on whether he intends to continue playing ODIs.
As of now, Kohli is set to be part of India’s squad for the upcoming ODI series in Australia, provided he wants to go. However, the final decision rests with the former Indian captain, and if he chooses not to travel to Australia, this will offer an opportunity to the young guns like Abhishek Sharma.

Notably, Kohli is one of the world’s greatest ODI batters. He has so far played 302 matches and scored 14181 runs at an average of 57.88 and a strike rate of around 94 for India. Virat has smashed 51 centuries and 74 fifties, with a highest score of 183 to his name.
He has also been known as one of the best fielders, taking 161 catches. He also has five wickets to his name in ODIs.
