Two children were hit by two different cars outside the same primary school on the same day. A nine-year-old boy needed hospital treatment following one of the incidents at school drop-off time on Tuesday. Gwent Police confirmed they were called to a traffic collision on Middle Coedcae Road, at the top entrance of Blaenavon Primary School. Police and ambulance attended, and a nine-year-old boy was taken to hospital. Parents claim this was one of two incidents on that same day, sparking the creation of a change.org petition . They are calling for a road safety crossing or other adequate safety measure to be placed on the road outside the school during school pick up and drop off times. They believe if safety protocols are not implemented, a fatality could happen. A spokesperson for Torfaen Council, speaking on behalf of the school, confirmed they are aware of concerns surrounding safety, and are urging all parents to ensure they do not park unlawfully on the roads surrounding the infant school. A Torfaen council spokesperson said: “We are aware of the accident on Tuesday and wish the child involved well and a speedy recovery. “Although the accident was away from the school, we are aware that the incident has drawn attention to concerns about unsafe parking around the school and difficulties crossing roads. “We would like to remind all drivers not to park or stop on double yellow lines outside the school.” Shannon Griffiths, the mother of the nine-year-old boy that was hit by a car and hospitalised, says she set up the petition to “help protect the school’s children.” Shannon shared the petition to Facebook , and said: “This petition is for pupils at Blaenavon primary school to have a crossing or other adequate safety measure put in place when crossing the main road to the nursery entrance (top gate) after two children being hit by different cars in the same day crossing the same road. “It is needed to protect the safety of our children before fatalities happen – help us protect our children.” Shannon has also confirmed that thankfully, her son has not been left with any serious injuries. A spokesperson for Gwent Police said: “We received a report of a road traffic collision on Middle Coedcae Road, Blaenavon at around 9am on Tuesday 16 September. “Officers attended alongside the Welsh Ambulance Service. “The collision involved a car and a pedestrian, a nine-year-old boy, was taken to hospital for treatment. “Officers have spoken to several people and no offences were identified.”
