Montenegro journalist Danica Nikolić receives new death threat

Berlin, September 18, 2025—The Committee to Protect Journalists calls on Montenegrin authorities to thoroughly investigate death threats against journalist Danica Nikolić, editor-in-chief of the independent news site M Portal, and to take all necessary steps to guarantee her safety.

“The ongoing death threats against journalist Danica Nikolić are increasingly alarming and have gone on for far too long,” said Attila Mong, CPJ’s Europe representative. “Authorities in Montenegro must act decisively to stop these intimidating messages being sent and provide Nikolić with the protection she urgently needs.”

On September 10, Nikolić received an email on her work account, which threatened her with physical violence and death, news reports said. The threat came from the same sender who has repeatedly targeted Nikolić since 2022.

Nikolić said the ongoing threats were a response to M Portal’s reporting, as the emails were sent to her work address and similar messages targeted other independent media outlets as well. M Portal covers corruption and organized crime.

According to the journalist, police had already identified the sender and the foreign location of the threats. In the new emails, the individual announced an intention to come to Montenegro, Nikolić said. Local media said that police in Montenegro had identified the individual responsible, but authorities had made no moves to prosecute them, those sources said. Nikolić was quoted by local media as saying that she filed a police report following the September 10 threat but had decided not to submit further complaints, citing a lack of results.

CPJ emailed the press department of the Ministry of Interior, which oversees the police and prosecutor’s office in Podgorica, but did not received a response.
