KUCHING, Sept 27: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the Sarawak Delta Geopark’s potential recognition as a UNESCO Global Geopark could pave the way for direct air links with South Korea’s Jeju Island, which already holds the same status.
“Imagine this—we are already a candidate for UNESCO Global Geopark status. God willing, it won’t be long (until we secure the status). In general, we have met all the requirements, and it is just a matter of declaration for Kuching to be recognised as a UNESCO Global Geopark.
“Bau and Serian form part of this geopark, each contributing its own unique character. This will draw the world’s attention,” he said during the launching of the Siniawan Waterfront, Siniawan Country Music Festival 2025, the 125th Anniversary of Siniawan Heritage Town, and 1the 5th Anniversary of the Siniawan Night Market in Bau today.
With AirBorneo set to launch soon, he noted it could establish a link between Jeju Island and the Sarawak Delta Geopark, thereby promoting Siniawan internationally as part of the global geopark network.
“With that recognition, it will connect point-to-point and form a circuit, making us part of the geopark network—a new attraction that will further grow our economy,” he said.
The Premier added that this was why Serembu assemblyman Miro Simuh, Tasik Biru assemblyman Dato Henry Harry Jinep, and Bukit Semuja assemblyman John Ilus had approached him to request the upgrading of the old Kuching-Bau road.
“This would be like the Pan Borneo Highway. We would then have two routes: the Pan Borneo Highway and Jalan Penrissen, leading to Bau and all the way to Sematan.
“With upgraded infrastructure, it will be easier for people to come to Siniawan. When travel becomes easier, the coffee shops will be full, businesses will flourish, and activities will grow. We have policies in place to attract visitors to our geopark, and it has its own unique character,” he said.
In addition to Miro, Henry, and Ilus, also present were Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Sarawak and Minister for Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development Sarawak, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah; Kuching Division Resident, Dayang Joanita Azizah Abang Morshidi; and Dayak Bidayuh National Association (DBNA) president, Datu Ik Pahon Joyik. — DayakDaily
