Court Asks Nnamdi Kanu To Open His Defence

…Orders NMA To Set Up Committee On His Health Status

ABUJA – Justice James Omoto-sho of the Federal High Court Abuja, on Friday, ordered the Biafra na-tion agitator, Nnamdi Kanu to open his defence in his ongo-ing trial over alleged terrorism charge.

The order followed the dis-missal of a no-case-submission made by Kanu.

Ruling on the application, the trial judge reasoned that the prosecution counsel, Chief Solomon Awomolo, was able to establish a prima facie case against the defendant.

Justice Omotosho held that it is in the best interest of Kanu to be given the opportunity to clear some issues raised against him.

Consequently, the Judge or-dered Kanu to present his de-fence in the alleged terrorism charges.

Earlier, Justice James Omo-tosho, on Friday, also ordered the President of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) to set up a team of medical experts to ascertain the health status of the Biafra nation agitator, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

Justice Omotosho stated that the NMA committee is at liberty to use any hospital in the country to carry out its investi-gations.

Justice Omotosho held that the committee among others should visit the hospital of the Department of the State Ser-vice (DSS) to confirm whether or not it has capacity to meet the health needs of Kanu.

The court gave the com-mittee eight days to submit its report for consideration on whether or not to transfer Kanu to the National hospital for treatment.

Furthermore, the trial Judge ordered that the Chief Medical Director of the National hospi-tal must also be a member of the committee.

In addition, Justice Omoto-sho, held that the committee should comprise between 8 to 10 members of the NMA and shall have Cardiologist and Neurologist.

The Court’s decision fol-lowed the divergent views by the DSS and Private consul-tants of Kanu who made dif-ferent recommendations on the health of Kanu.
