The opening date for a popular Birmingham coffee house’s new venue has been confirmed. Tranquil 1992 opened its doors on Vyse Street in the Jewellery Quarter in December 2023 – and exclusively confirmed to BirminghamLive this summer that it would be expanding to a new venue after becoming a staple within the city neighbourhood. The coffee house has won praise for its velvety matchas, and signature egg coffees, prompting owner Thang Nguyen to expand operations into the former Nails Bab Salon premises on Hall Street. Thang confirmed he will be keeping his original Vyse Street location and turning it into a wine bar. “My main business will still be coffee – the wine bar is my passion project,” said Thang. The official opening date for Tranquil 1992’s new Hall Street location is Friday September 26 at 8.30am. Thang explained: “Our first year was the perfect chance to learn plenty of lessons. Since we have experienced the demands for Vietnamese coffee and Uji matcha, we have decided to relocate the bigger space in the main area of the Jewellery Quarter. “Our new site is not only larger and more welcoming—it also gives us the platform we need to grow. We’re proud to remain in the Jewellery Quarter, the community where our journey began.” He explained he wants to keep the “cosy and intimate” feeling of his Vyse Street location for the new wine bar, and will eventually offer jazz performances, display more art pieces and serve Vietnamese charcuterie boards and snacks. Drinks at Tranquil don’t come cheap – an espresso will set you back £4, white coffee £5.65, to more complex drinks like egg coffee costing £6.10, coconut coffee £5.85, salted matcha latte £5.95. But Thang says it is the process involved that is time consuming, but worth it, which is what fans come for. He explained: “We use robust Vietnamese beans, we roast them with butter and chocolate in the shop, we are like chefs! “We then hand brew it, we have customers asking for beans and asking how to brew coffee at home.” The newly opened location on Hall Street offers seating for up to 27 guests and “maintains Tranquil 1992’s signature mid-century aesthetic, combining warm tones, vintage decor, and ambient lighting.” The team plan to expand their bakery selection and introduce new beverage options. Tranquil 1992’s second venue will be based at 18A Hall Street, Birmingham .
