GVMC corporators ‘study tour’ has locals up in arms

Members of the Visakhapatnam Apartment Resident Welfare Association (VARWA) and Greater Visakha Residents Colony Association Federation (Nivas) on Thursday raised questions over the credibility of the study tours being undertaken by the corporators of the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC). They also demanded that reports from the previous three study tours be made public.

Mr B.B. Ganesh from VARWA, said that 82 corporators have gone on a study tour this year to Jaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, and Delhi and a few other places which include Ajmer and Pushkar. This is the fourth consecutive study tour undertaken by the corporators. In 2022 they visited Delhi, Shimla, Manali, Chandigarh and Agra, in 2023, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir and they travelled to Coimbatore, Mysuru and Bangalore in 2024. So far, the reports of the past tours have not been placed for discussion in the council.

“Their observations have not been communicated to the people of Vizag. Were these study tours useful? Were any initiatives incorporated from any corporation they visited and implemented in the city?” He further questioned, “Is this a study tour or an amusement trip?” “The tours involve huge expenditure, and it is being borne by the GVMC from the property tax collected from residents. The GVMC should publish the reports of the last three tours,” he added.
