BEACHWOOD, Ohio — At 5:30 p.m. Oct. 5, the Jewish Federation of Cleveland will mark two years since the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks on Israel by hosting a remembrance event.
The 2023 attacks resulted in the murder of more than 1,200 people, the wounding of thousands more, and the kidnapping of more than 250 people.
The Oct. 5 event (held on Oct. 5 because Oct. 7 is the Jewish holiday of Sukkot) will be a community-wide gathering to remember all those who were lost or stolen two years ago, to demand the release of the remaining hostages, and to pray for the day when neighbors can live side by side in peace.
The program will include messages of support from public officials, as well as poems, prayers and songs.
Featured speakers will include Yahel Lifshitz, a 42-year-old survivor of the Oct. 7 attack. Lifshitz, who was attending the Midburn festival near the Nova site, is a former Case Western Reserve University student, a high-tech professional, and a mother of two. Fluent in English and deeply committed to sharing her experience, she has spoken publicly on media platforms about coping with the trauma of that day.
In addition, Lior Carmel, chairman of Kibbutz Kissufim in the Gaza envelope, is expected to attend and share his community’s story of resilience in the aftermath of the attacks.
The event will take place at Landerhaven, 6111 Landerhaven Drive in Mayfield Heights.
People from all faiths are invited to attend the event. There is no cost to attend.
Pre-registration is mandatory for all planning to attend. You can pre-register at jewishcleveland.org.
Support for caregivers: Those who feel lonely or over-challenged while performing caregiver duties can get support by meeting other caregivers and sharing encouragement, experiences and practical tools at an event scheduled for Oct. 4.
“The Power of Community Support” will be held at 1 p.m. Oct. 4 at Heights Libraries’ Lee Road branch, 2345 Lee Road in Cleveland Heights.
Join Mother 2 Mother and CFK staff to find strength, resilience and hope through honest conversations and collective wisdom. Attendees will discover how supportive relationships can help navigate the highs and lows of caregiving.
Joy Howard, a parent mentor from Reaching Heights and ECAG, will also be available to answer questions for parents seeking support.

Journalists to discuss tariffs, politics at JCU: The public is invited to John Carroll University’s College of Arts and Sciences Oct. 2 as the Tim Russert Department of Communication, and Department of Political Science will host a free forum examining how journalists cover some of the most timely issues in today’s economy — the interaction of tariffs and politics on the national stage.
At 7 p.m. Oct. 2 in the Donahue Auditorium at JCU’s Dolan Science Center, Daniel Desrochers, Politico’s international trade reporter, and Pete Williams, a former NBC News correspondent and current John Carroll Journalist-in-Residence, will present “When Policy Meets the Press: Covering Tariffs, Trade, and Trump.”
Desrochers focuses on President Trump’s tariffs and international trade policy at Politico. He previously covered Congress, the White House and federal courts for the Kansas City Star, chronicling issues important to Missouri and Kansas and the changing Republican Party.
Williams served as NBC News correspondent from 1993 to 2022, and as Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs under President George H. W. Bush.
“This conversation with Daniel Desrochers and Pete Williams will give our students and the public an inside look at how trade and tariffs become front-page news,” said Brent Brossmann, chair of the Tim Russert Department of Communication, in a release. “It’s a timely topic that shows how policy and journalism intersect in shaping public understanding.”

WOLFS art exhibits: WOLFS, of Beachwood, has two scheduled art exhibits, one set for October, and the other, for sporing, 2026.
Beginning Oct. 10, WOLFS, 23645 Mercantile Road, will present the works of Cleveland School artist August Frederick Biehle (1885-1979).
An early member of what is known today as the Cleveland School of Art, Biehle made important contributions to the artistic character of the city during this era, including creating artwork for the legendary, prominent and provocative Kokoon Club.
Biehle joined the Cleveland modernist movement in 1912, contributing to its gathering momentum. The son of a German-immigrant decorator, Biehle received his initial art training in Cleveland before going to Munich in 1903 and again in 1910 for two years of study.
William H. Robinson said of Biehle: “One of Northeast Ohio’s most prolific and distinguished artists, Biehle combined masterful draftsmanship with a superior sense of design. He assimilated aspects of German Expressionism, Fauvism, and Cubism, and moved skillfully between a range of styles, from Jugendstil (a German modernist style) to American Scene realism.
“He also displayed his versatility by mastering a variety of media and techniques, from graphite drawing to painting in oil, gouache, pastel and tempera.”
The Biehle exhibit runs from Oct. 10 to Dec. 30. The opening reception will take place from 5:30-8 p.m. Oct. 10.

In the spring, WOLS will present “William Sommer: A Retrospective,” on dates to be announced.
According to WO0LFS, “Both August Biehle and William Sommer represent the very foundation of the Cleveland School and are among the best of those artists that have distinguished themselves in this region for decades.”
