JENKS — When these programs clashed during the 2022 regular season, the result was one of the greatest games in the history of Tulsa County high school football.
Jenks prevailed 38-35 and ended Bixby’s state-record win streak at 58 games.
When you witness something as special as Jenks-Bixby 2022, there’s the understanding that you may never again see a game at that level of drama, ferocity and fireworks.
There was another 38-35 Jenks-Bixby football score on Friday.
Unbelievably, it was the halftime score — with the Class 6AI top-ranked Spartans having rallied for that slim advantage over the second-ranked Trojans.
After a 48-minute, 38-point first period, there was a 46-minute, 35-point second period.
After having been unusually mistake-prone, Bixby trailed with 28-17 during the second period.
This big-event ballgame felt as though it might belong to the Trojans, but the Spartans responded with the type of playmaking that has been so common during their program’s dynasty period.
What is crazier?
That Jenks scored 35 first-half points against mighty Bixby?
That Trojan quarterback Landon Kizzar, in only his fourth varsity start, totaled 316 passing yards during the opening half?
Or that a seriously potent Jenks offense was shut out and limited to 20 total yards after halftime?
Bixby defensive coordinator Rodney Flowers made obviously effective halftime adjustments, and this showdown ended with another in a long line of Spartan statement victories.
In the District 6AI-1 opener for both teams, the final score was 66-35 as Spartan QB Carson Kirby commemorated his 30th career start with six touchdown passes.
Nearly every week, the Bixby program achieves a milestone of some sort. On Friday, there was this one: in games played at Jenks’ Allan Trimble Stadium, Bixby has a five-game win streak.
During this wild opening half, OU coach Brent Venables and a capacity crowd of 10,000 saw everything you can see in a football game. The menu included a safety, a two-point conversion, terrible pass-coverage mistakes by each defense, and 10 touchdowns.
The biggest of the big plays included Kailib Dillard’s 82-yard touchdown reception and tight end Braxton Daniel’s 53-yard scoring catch for Jenks, and those TDs were countered by an 80-yard touchdown for Bixby star Braeden Presley.
Each defense was guilty of horrific mistakes, but Bixby cleaned it up in the third period and beyond.
With time-consuming drives and substantially better defense during the second half, Bixby was cruelly efficient and doused the excitement on the Jenks side of the stadium. Bixby’s Jayson Moll was sensational with 231 rushing yards (including TD dashes of 44 and 70 yards).
Among the many, many Spartan highlights was a Kirby pass to Cetcher DeHart. Rolling to his right and away from Trojan pressure, Kirby extended the play before firing a pass to the right edge of the north end zone.
DeHart executed a Cris Carter-level toe-tap catch for the touchdown and a 10-point Spartan lead.
After that, this Bixby game became a very typical Bixby game.
Next week, in the next step toward in what seems to be a march to what would be a 12th consecutive state-title game, the unbeaten Spartans host Moore.
