T.J.Maxx is closing up shop in the Back Bay, nearly a decade after the discount clothing retailer moved in to the storefront at the corner of Newbury Street and Massachusetts Avenue.
TJX Companies, the Framingham-based parent of T.J.Maxx, Marshalls, and HomeGoods, filed a notice with the state on Monday saying it would be laying off 117 workers. A spokesperson confirmed with the Globe on Friday that these workers were all employed at the store at 360 Newbury Street, right next to the Hynes Convention Center MBTA station entrance, and that the store was expected to close by Jan. 3.
The spokesperson added that it was a one-off closure for the company, which expects to open about 130 new stores under the TJX umbrella this year nationwide, for a total of more than 5,200 locations by the end of 2025.

“We are always assessing and reviewing our real estate strategies, and our decision to close this store reflects that thinking,” the spokesperson said. “The Boston area has been the home for our headquarters for nearly 50 years and continues to be a very important market for us.”
The T.J.Maxx store, which takes up three floors and 45,000 square feet, according to Boston Magazine, opened in 2016, replacing former tenant Best Buy, which shuttered in 2012. Before that, the retail floors of the building — renovated by renowned architect Frank Gehry toward the end of the last century — was the longtime home of music emporium Tower Records, and then a Virgin Megastore. Luxury condos occupy the stories above.

The spokesperson added that TJX would try to find the affected workers at the Newbury Street store employment at nearby locations.
The closure, first reported by the Boston Business Journal, comes amid a burst of retail activity on Newbury Street, with J.Crew, candle-making studio CandleLux, and linen purveyor Pratesi all opening stores on the upscale thoroughfare this year.
T.J. Maxx has two other stores in Boston: one near Downtown Crossing, and the other in Dorchester’s South Bay Center.
