A seemingly endless number of masked goons poured into a Bay Area jewelry store to smash and grab $1million worth of merchandise, dramatic surveillance footage shows.
At least twenty thieves dressed in dark clothing entered the Heller Jewelry store in San Ramon, California, on Monday at 1.50pm, according to a statement by the San Ramon Police Department.
Described as a ‘take-over style armed robbery’, the criminals raided the store on Canyon Road, smashing the display cases and drawing handguns.
One criminal in the group fired shots through the front entrance, according to the police.
They fled into getaway cars that were waiting in a nearby valet parking area.
Police pursued the vehicles but stopped the chase. Authorities said they did so due to ‘the inherent danger to the public and because air support was over and available to continue tracking the suspect vehicle.’
Police air support was able to track the thugs into Alameda County, where the suspects were detained in Oakland and in Dublin.
The seven suspects that police captured ranged in age from 17 to 31, and the police believe they are part of similar crimes throughout the Bay Area, according to ABC News 7.
The authorities said: ‘San Ramon Detectives will tirelessly continue their investigation into this incident and ask anyone who may have witnessed the robbery to contact Corpal Kevin Tjahjadi at (925) 733-7316.’
The upsetting footage shows the criminals coming in and seeming to draw guns on the staff immediately.
As some of the offenders keep their weapons pointed at staff, the others begin to smash away at the protective glass casing.
The group was armed with what appeared to be hammers, pickaxes, and crowbars.
The lawbreakers were also prepared with bags to stash away their loot.
‘When they went in, they basically took over the store, basically taking whatever jewelry was available,’ Lt. Mike Pistello of the San Ramon Police Department told ABC News 7.
The one suspect who shot rounds through the entrance did so to escape from the store’s security measures that require a security guard to press a button, said police.
Pistello said to the outlet: ‘What ended up happening was, once the suspects went in, the door locked behind them.’
Pistello said to the channel: ‘This is not their first time doing something like this.’
He added: ‘This is not something that happens a lot in San Ramon. We’re doing our best to follow up on every lead possible.’
On July 21, 2023, the same jewelry store was robbed similarly by at least 11 individuals.
They took nearly the same amount, $1.1 million, in products during the middle of the day and escaped in four getaway cars.
Of the group, five members were charged in connection with the robbery by the United States Attorney’s Office that occurred on August 2, 2023.
The ravaged business issued a statement on its social media about the incident and thanked its community.
The post said: ‘We are deeply grateful that nobody was harmed. That is what matters most.’
‘Heller Jewelers has been part of this community for nearly thirty years, and we’ve always believed in the strength of the relationships we’ve built with you.’
The company thanked those who have supported them and reassured them that their commitment to the community remains stronger than ever.
The statement also announced that they will be reopening on September 27.
They promised to ‘continue serving you with the same care, trust, and dedication that have guided the Heller family and our incredible team for generations’.
