Former Gamecock QB Connor Shaw awake, coherent after collapsing during son's football game

GREENVILLE — Legendary South Carolina quarterback Connor Shaw was hospitalized on Sept. 17 after a sudden health scare.

Several sources close to the situation confirmed to The Post and Courier that Shaw’s condition is stable. He is awake and coherent at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Shaw collapsed on the field while coaching his son’s 8U youth football game at Gracely Park. Other attendees and participants at the game immediately came to his aid until an ambulance arrived. Shaw was conscious when emergency personnel reached him.

“Former quarterback for the University of South Carolina Connor Shaw was coaching his son’s 8U flag football game at Gracely Park on Wednesday when he collapsed about 15 minutes after the game started,” a statement from the city of Simpsonville read. “Emergency medical services took Mr. Shaw to Greenville Memorial Hospital. The Parks & Recreation Department was informed on Thursday that Mr. Shaw is in stable condition.”

Shaw turns 34 on Sept. 19.

USC coach Shane Beamer said that he’d been in touch with Shaw’s family, and that Shaw was communicative.

“Thank God, it looks like everything will be OK,” Beamer said.

He is the winningest quarterback in USC history. Shaw led the Gamecocks to 27 victories from 2010-13 and never lost at Williams-Brice Stadium. His crowning moment came during his senior year, when he replaced a struggling Dylan Thompson under center with the Gamecocks trailing 17-0 at undefeated and fifth-ranked Missouri.

Shaw, playing with a partially torn knee ligament and suffering from an illness that required IVs before the game, led USC to an improbable 27-24 win in double overtime. It was immediately dubbed “The Miracle at Mizzou.”

USC plays at No. 23 Missouri this weekend.
