A lip reader has revealed King Charles’ succinct two-word response to Donald Trump following his speech at the grand state banquet in Windsor Castle.
During his address, Trump, 79, seemed to deviate from the script by making several political comments—a move not typically seen during state banquets, particularly when the monarch is present. With his script in hand, Trump appeared to suddenly target his predecessor, Joe Biden.
Positioned between Charles and Kate Middleton at the 47-metre-long table, Trump, on his historic second state visit, turned to the King and said: “We are, as a country, as you know, doing unbelievably well.”
He went on: “We had a very… sick country one year ago, and today I believe we’re the hottest country anywhere in the world. In fact, nobody’s even questioning it… but we owe so much of that to you.”
Following the speech, which was also attended by other royals such as Prince William and Queen Camilla—whom Trump also paid tribute to—God Save the King was played.
As everyone took their seats to start the feast, the King and the US President were seen engaging in conversation. Lip reader Jeremy Freeman couldn’t decipher everything that was said but did pick up on a potent two-word comment from Charles that perhaps perfectly encapsulated his feelings about what was said.
According to Jeremy, Charles simply responded: “Thank you.”
During his address, Trump praised Prince William, declaring: “His Majesty has also raised a remarkable son in His Royal Highness, Prince of Wales, really amazing, we’ve gotten to know you, and I think you’ll be an unbelievable success in the future.”
He added that he and First Lady Melania were “delighted to visit again with Prince William and see Princess Catherine, so radiant, so healthy, so beautiful.”
Regarding the bond between America and Britain, he declared: “Together, we’ve done more good for humanity than any two countries in all of history.
“Together, we must defend the exceptional heritage that makes us who we are, and we must continue to stand for the values and the people of the English-speaking world, and we do indeed stand for that. On behalf of all Americans, I offer a toast to one of the great friendships.”
Among the distinguished guests were Trump’s son-in-law Mark Boulos, accompanied by his wife Tiffany Trump. Prime Minister Keir Starmer attended the event alongside Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch.
His Majesty also delivered remarks before the American president, paying tribute to the “special relationship” that unites both countries. He declared: “We have celebrated together, mourned together and stood together in the best and worst of times.”
The monarch continued: “The ocean may still divide us, but in so many other ways we are now the closest of kin.”
