Sweden’s Truecaller, a popular app offering caller ID services, keeps all user contact lists private and restricts their access publicly, said CEO Rishit Jhunjhunwala. Speaking to Kiran Rathee, Jhunjhunwala said regulatory pressures in India to curb the menace of spam messages are a positive step towards recognising the scale of the issue. Edited excerpts:What are some of the most common misconceptions about Truecaller? One of the biggest myths is that Truecaller uploads and makes your entire contact list public which is absolutely false. Contacts are never searchable by others, and users remain in full control of their data. Our business model is built around premium subscriptions and trusted advertising, with a strong focus on transparency. What can you tell us about Truecaller’s data practices?Truecaller only processes the minimal data required for the service to function, primarily a name and phone number. Truecaller does not collect or upload data from your contacts and users can verify, update, or remove their information at any time, ensuring complete control over their digital identity.Live EventsWith telecom firms and OEMs also coming up with their anti-spam solutions, how will Truecaller stay relevant? There is a key difference between Truecaller and a lot of competing solutions over the years. Truecaller is powered by real-time reports from the community which makes it dynamic, vibrant, accurate and self-correcting. Others are based on static data sets which can get outdated in a matter of days. In addition, Truecaller does far more than just show you a name. Truecaller can show the intent behind every call-giving you vital additional context such as what kind of scammer it is, what industry, when they usually make calls, how many have reported it, what comments have people left about the scammer and so on. A key problem cited by telcos to curb spam is OTTs and their non-regulation by authorities. Does Truecaller have any solution for it?Truecaller spam detection is entirely powered by community reports. Millions of reports every day help train the algorithms to accurately detect or block all sorts of unwanted communication, regardless of the source. In this way, Truecaller is actually telco and platform agnostic-it directly addresses the root cause, thereby making consumers’ lives easier. It’s a proven approach that continues to deliver reliable results globally.Add as a Reliable and Trusted News Source Add Now!
