MACKINAC ISLAND, MI – As everyone knows, Mackinac is an island that runs on horsepower. And this weekend, these four-legged beauties are being given a national spotlight on the CBS Saturday Morning show.
From the big draft horses that pull the tour carriages and flatbed freight drays to Grand Hotel’s high-stepping Hackney horses that are hooked to the VIP carriages, horses are the lifeblood of this top vacation spot.
“Mackinac Island’s iconic horse culture is heading to the national spotlight! Tune in this Saturday on CBS Saturday Morning from 7–9 AM EST to catch a special story celebrating the horses, history, and traditions that make our island truly unique,” the Mackinac Island Tourism staff said in highlighting the upcoming show.
“Whether you’re a longtime fan or discovering us for the first time, this is a beautiful look at a tradition that continues to define life on Mackinac Island.”

The CBS Saturday Morning segment is expected to feature Brad Chambers of Mackinac Island Carriage Tours, Dr. Carl “Shaker” Hites, a veterinarian who works on the island, and Ben Mosely, the retired stable manager and Hackney Horse expert for Grand Hotel.
Michelle Miller, co-host of CBS Saturday Morning, came to the island earlier this summer with a field producer, videographer and sound technician. They used the trip to get deep into Mackinac’s horse culture.
