Starbucks closing stores: At least 20 in Mass. on the chopping block — here’s where

Earlier this week, Starbucks abruptly announced it will close several stores across the U.S. and Canada this weekend.
If you’re a Starbucks fan, the move may make your typical morning coffee run look different and call for a detour.
Starting Sept. 28, this will be the case for many Bay Staters as Starbucks shutters more than 20 locations in Massachusetts, according to updated hours and closures noted on the Starbucks app.

While the company has not officially released a list of stores slated for closure, a Starbucks spokesperson confirmed with MassLive the app will be updated by Sunday to reflect new store hours and closures. It already reveals many stores with open hours that end Saturday.
“… We understand [closures] will impact partners and customers. Our coffeehouses are centers of the community, and closing any location is difficult,” Brian Niccol, chairman and chief executive officer wrote in a release.
Niccol said the company is “working hard” to transfer employees to nearby locations where possible.

It is unclear how many jobs will be affected by closures.
However, the company revealed it will cut approximately 900 non-retail roles as it continues restructuring and building “towards a better Starbucks.”
Niccol said that when the company launched its “Back to Starbucks” initiative last fall, the company reviewed its North American coffeehouse portfolio and found several areas for improvement.

“During the review, we identified coffeehouses where we’re unable to create the physical environment our customers and partners expect, or where we don’t see a path to financial performance, and these locations will be closed,” Niccol said.
Starbucks will end this fiscal year with a store count 1% less than it started with, taking into account both new stores that have opened this year and the upcoming closures.
